Trillium Lake Engagement Session at Sunset

When people imagine an engagement session in Oregon, there's a good chance they're picturing Trillium Lake. With crystal-clear water reflecting Mount Hood, towering evergreens, and wide-open views, it's one of the most iconic places in the Pacific Northwest—and after this session, it's easy to see why. This beautiful engagement session took place about an hour before sunset on a perfect spring evening. The weather couldn't have been better, giving us calm water, soft golden light, and Mount Hood standing proudly in the background for nearly every photo.

Why Trillium Lake is One of Oregon's Best Engagement Session Locations

Located just outside of Government Camp, Trillium Lake offers couples one of the most scenic backdrops in the state. Whether you're dreaming of mountain views, lakeside portraits, or peaceful forest trails, this location has it all within a short walk. One thing to keep in mind is that Trillium Lake is generally only accessible from late spring through fall. During the winter months, the lake freezes over, and snow often limits access, making warmer months the ideal time to plan your engagement session.

Two Outfits, Two Completely Different Vibes

One of my favorite parts of this session was the variety we were able to create by incorporating two different outfits. We started with a formal look that perfectly complemented the mountain scenery. Their elevated style gave the session a timeless, romantic feel that looked incredible against the backdrop of Mount Hood.

Later, they changed into something more casual, allowing us to capture a completely different side of their relationship. The relaxed outfits made the second half of the session feel playful, comfortable, and true to who they are together. If you're planning your own engagement session, I always recommend bringing two outfits when possible. It adds variety to your gallery and creates the feeling of two sessions in one.

Even the Ducks Showed Up

The ducks.

They wandered into the background at just the right moments, making it look like they had been hired for the shoot. Around here, we jokingly call them our "paid actors."

Of course, they weren't actually on payroll—but they definitely understood the assignment. Those little unexpected moments are often what make a session feel the most memorable.

Skipping Rocks and Enjoying the Moment

Some of my favorite images from the evening weren't posed at all. As the sun lowered behind the mountains, we spent time skipping rocks along the shoreline, laughing, talking, and simply letting the evening unfold naturally.

Those candid moments often become the images couples love most because they reflect what the experience actually felt like—not just how it looked.

That's always my goal: creating photographs that feel genuine, effortless, and uniquely you.
